2013 Bonneville Salt Flats – 300 m.p.h. or Bust

January 24th, 2013

Alan Johnson and his team at Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop are currently building one wicked looking 1953 Studebaker Competition Coupe slated to debut at this year’s 2013 Bonneville Speed Weeks August 10th-16th.

The project’s goal is to build a car so slippery that it can attain 300mph without the use of a turbo, blower or nitrous oxide and just 370 cubic inches of Chevy power (built by Keith Dorton – Automotive Specialist Inc.).  The car was designed using SolidWorks 3D CAD software. Shane Phillips – parts manager for Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop is slated to drive the ‘Baker.

As you can see from the rendering and accompanying shop photos – the nose of the Studebaker has been stretched significantly. The body is hand formed aluminum offering sleek lines in an attempt to get the slippery ‘Stude to maximum velocity on the land speed course. Look for more updates as the ‘Baker gets closer to its debut on the Salt!
